Spidey More WIP

final(ish) line art

flat colors
The thing I'm most proud of is the "spider face" hand. Believe it or not this is the first time I've actually finished a drawing of Spider Man swinging through the city. One more step to go.

Spidey WIP

My loose sketches always seem to have more personality than the final lines. Always struggling to find the balance between realism and cartooning - the longer I work on a piece, the less I like the artistic choices I've made. I need to try spending an entire Saturday drawing something in one sitting instead of fiddling around for an hour each day. Actually I'm having fun with this piece, despite having to draw buildings.

Cobrachiosaurus

Behold the mighty cobrachiosaurus. This somewhat aged digital doodle is the result of one of my first attempts drawing with the Wacom tablet. The creature design is for the "Stick Man" comic.

Spider Man Re-Design Process

original design
Commissioner wanted a "turn around" of Spider Man based on this design I did a few years back for a contest. Or so I thought...
mask and glove ideas
Ended up with a lot of changes. Most of the details on this design came from the commissioner, who has been very specific and supplied a lot of references. My only real contribution to the look is the "spider face" gloves.
web shooter, boots, spider logo
Webs radiating out from the spider on chest look cool here, but they direct the viewers eye away from the face, which I find distracting. I like the idea that the web shooters have triggers that look like legs and spinnerets.
back designs
My original back design was bugging me (no pun intended) because it reminded me of Galactus' helmet.
"inking"

color options
nearly finished line art
Still needs some minor (hopefully) tweaking and adjustments, but this is more or less what I'm calling the final line art. The guy who requested this is way specific about the proportions (he even sent me YouTube videos about rock climbers with "ape" proportions) so I slimmed him down a little compared to the version above.

This is only a small taste of the amount of work that has gone into a $25 commission.

Pokemon Process - Typhlosion

Typhlosion

Find a couple good animal references.

Rough blue line sketch, tighten lines.

Quick colors, eye drop from original pokemon art.

Smudge colors, play around with details and layer modes.

Just a few more color adjustments and some more detail on the nose.

The Date p.1

Trying to get caught up on my goal to finish a comic page each week. This is part one of a short (4-6 page) portfolio piece called "The Date". I'm not terribly happy with this one, I've redrawn this page many times, playing with different layouts and drawing techniques. I've been sitting on this for a while and I just need to move on to page two at this point.

Composer Series - John Zorn's Cobra "Snake Charmer"

I did these a while ago. First subject part of my series pairing a composer with an animal somehow associated with their music. This is John Zorn, playing sax for a cobra.

2nd take
His work "Cobra" is the culmination of years of experimenting on rules for "game pieces" where a prompter cues large ensembles of musicians in organized improvisations. Every performance of the piece is drastically different depending on the players and the cues.

Commissions!

Scribblog now has a Pay Pal gadget that allows you to purchase a digital sketch of any character, creature or random thing you want (keep it PG-13). During payment, make sure you include a description of what you want me to draw int he "note to seller" box. There are currently three options: $5 for a black and white sketch (line art), $10 for an illustration with flat colors and $20 for a fully rendered digital painting. The final art will be posted on this blog. If you have a special request that doesn't fit into the payment options, let me know and we will work something out. Below are examples of the first two options. Also check out the previous post for an example of $10 and $20 options.

Elephant Girl

While taking the dog for a walk I saw some buttercups in tall grass that inspired me to paint this.

But of course, that was a little boring, so I decide to add a girl with an elephant head. I've always liked collage and briefly considered just doing the whole thing as a collage, but decided it would be better practice to draw it.

I'm not sure how these things happen. Someone at work had asked me to draw an elephant the other day, but what that has to do with the flowers is beyond me.

Sandy Koufax

Sandy Koufax, requested by my Uncle David, drawn and colored in Photoshop. This turned out okay. I'm not a painter, so it's easy to get lost during my futile attempts at dabbling along in the world of color. I don't really ever finish them, so much as I let them go once they've outgrown my ability to take care of properly. My paintings are pet alligators. Here are some earlier stages of this piece.
