Sandy Koufax

Sandy Koufax, requested by my Uncle David, drawn and colored in Photoshop. This turned out okay. I'm not a painter, so it's easy to get lost during my futile attempts at dabbling along in the world of color. I don't really ever finish them, so much as I let them go once they've outgrown my ability to take care of properly. My paintings are pet alligators. Here are some earlier stages of this piece.

A Job in Comics

cover design
I've sort of secretly been working on a graphic novel adaptation of the book of Job. The narrative portion of Job quickly gives way to the "exalted prose" or poetic speeches that take up the majority of the text - my comic would condense a great deal of that and expand a bit on the life of Job before and during the crises using elements from the pseudepigraphal "Testament of Job".

I'd like to eventually do a series of graphic novels covering the entire Bible in great detail, but I thought I'd start with the story of Job because it stands on its own. No characters age or reoccur in other parts of the Bible (except Satan), plus the time period and geographic location are vague, so I can get away with fudging the historic details, instead of getting bogged down in researching every clay pot and sandal.

Technicolor Crucifixion

I feel comfortable with black, white and grey. Color overwhelms me. I always gravitate towards more muted, realistic and monochromatic color choices. Amanda is always telling me the things I paint look boring, so I tried to really embrace the rainbow with these different variations. I don't particularly like any of them. Part of the problem could be the subject matter not really fitting the vibrant colors I forced myself to use.

Stick and Stone

Here are the original pencil sketches of the pages I posted.

The design for Stick's new friend/pet/transportation come about fairly easily. These are the first few sketches I did of him and as you can see I got the basic design down fairly quickly. Part turtle, part armadillo, with a bit of eel in the face. I kind of like him standing more upright.

Stick p5-6

Next two pages of "STICK". Embarrassingly sloppy, but I'm way behind on my goal of drawing a comic page each week this year and trying to catch up. I'm about two months (6 pages) behind!

albino woman

A couple versions of a painting I did. Photo reference is of an african american albino woman. First one was drawn freehand and kind of ended up almost unearthly angelic.

Second I attempted to be more photorealistic, definitely not my strong point. I sketched and painted on a layer over the photo which is why the proportions are basically identical. It's basically cheating, but this was less of a drawing exercise and more to get better with color blending.
